This happens often as a house ages and it's foundation sags or floors warp. It's less expensive to adjust a door's height than to fix the source of the problem. As the wood expanded and contracted during changes in the temperature and humidity, the paint starting wedging itself in between the joints. Once the former owner stripped the door, the paint was removed and the gaps became obvious. Since these gaps are so thin, the door could be installed as-is and the gaps will not widen.
