* The last 2 photos show a similar door that we repaired, plugged, replaced glass, and refinished. We included these photos to give you an idea of how this door could look like with some work.
Gorgeous, antique, exterior door salvaged from an old, home in Scranton, PA. The door is made of solid Douglas Fir or pine, and is painted blue and white on the exterior side and brown on the interior side.
When most people hear "pine" they think of a cheap, weak, soft wood. New pine hewn from 10 - 20 year old trees don't have the same insect-resistant, rot-resistant, or even fire-resistant qualities that old pine, hewn from trees hundreds of years old have. Old pine is also much harder and stronger than young pine.
The door has a single window with a large, beautiful, wavy glass lite. There are 4 panels below the glass on each side.
Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However, we have a good selection of hardware to outfit it (check out our eBay store).
* If you would like the hardware holes plugged with solid wood, please email us for a quote.
Quirks & Considerations:
The door has 2, 1/8" gaps (see the 4th photo) This is not a serious issue and the door can still be installed and used for decades without the gaps widening. However, we could close the gaps using clamps and reinforce/secure the corners using modern glue and some dowels (wooden joints)--message us for a quote.
The height of the door was unevenly cut by 1/2". The cuts were most likely made to accommodate a warped floor or sagging foundation. We could cut the door to an even height/width, or cut it narrower/shorter, or even build it up to be wider/taller--message us for a quote.
Condition: The door is strong, sturdy, and in great structural condition. It only has nicks and scratches, but no rot, warp, or any other serious issues. Most of the blemishes that it has will disappear after sanding, prior to refinishing or repainting, and whatever remains will be subtle, "character marks." The door has a split panel (see last photo). Expansion and contraction occurs naturally due to changes in temperature, and the cracks are just a result of this process over the course of many years. It may sound funny, but when the panels expanded and reached their limits within their openings or frames; they were unable to stretch out any further, and ultimately cracked in the center to relieve their stress or tension.
The former owner had a dog who liked to scratch the door when she wanted to go outside. After many years of scratching the door with her paws, a small area of the interior lock-stile got scratched up (See 5th photo). We could sand out the scratched area of wood--message us for a quote.
All of the glass is intact and in great shape with only subtle scratches.
Swing: The hinge mortises span the thickness of the door allowing you to define the way the door swings.
Modification: We could also modify the door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
