* The last 5 photos show a door that we stripped, repaired, and refinished to give you an idea how an old, used door like this could clean up. Although we don't refinish anymore, we could modify and repair it--see more details below.
Beautiful, antique door salvaged from an old home in Northeastern PA. The door is made of solid Douglas Fir or pine and is painted on both sides.
Today, "pine" is known as a cheap, weak, soft wood. New pine hewn from 10 - 20 year old trees doesn't have the same insect-resistant, rot-resistant, or even fire-resistant qualities that old pine, hewn from trees hundreds of years old has. Old pine is also much harder and stronger than young pine.
The door has 2 windows: 1 with old glass and 1 with no glass. Below the windows are 4 raised panels.
Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However, we have a good selection of period hardware to outfit it (check out our store).
* If you would like any of the hardware holes plugged with solid wood, please email us for a quote.
Quirks & Considerations: The door has four 1/8" gaps (see last photo). This is not a serious issue and the door can still be installed and used for decades without the gaps widening. However, we could close the gaps using clamps and reinforce/secure the corners using modern glue and some dowels (wooden joints)--message us for a quote.
Condition: The door is strong, sturdy, and in great structural condition. It only has nicks and scratches, but no broken or cracked joints, gouges, rot, warp, or any other serious issues. The door has a small break on the bottom corner of the exterior side of the hinge-stile (see 4th photo). Two of the panels are cracked (see 5th photo). Expansion and contraction occurs naturally due to changes in temperature, and the cracks are just a result of this process over the course of many years. It may sound funny, but when the panels expanded and reached their limits within their openings or frames; they were unable to stretch out any further, and ultimately cracked in the center to relieve their stress or tension. We can repair or replace the panels--message us for a quote.
Otherwise, most of the blemishes that it has will disappear after sanding, prior to refinishing or repainting, and whatever remains will be subtle, "character marks".
Swing: The door is set up to swing into a home towards the left or away from the home towards the right.
We could modify the door to swing in the opposite direction--message us for a quote.
Modification: We could also modify this door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, replace glass with screen, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
