Rare, antique handrail salvaged from an old, Victorian home in Northeastern PA. The rail is made of steel and is painted black.

It has 1 thicker, vertical, square rod at one end and 6 thinner square and twisted vertical spindles next to it. There is a lovely, decorative motif in the center comprised of several curled pieces of steel.

This piece is quite unusual because its handrail extends outwardly (L-shape) from the end that has the thick rod. not only curves at the end, but it also curves out at the other end. This must have been at the top of a 1-step landing.

Unlike modern, hollow handrails, you could feel the strength and weight of this piece as soon as you grab it. If you're going to lean or put your weight on the handrail, you not only want it to have the capacity to do so, but you also want it to give you a sense that you could trust it. This handrail is definitely the type to give you that peace of mind.

The handrail is completely, straight, intact, and in good condition with no breaks, cracks, dents, or gouges. The thinner spindle on the opposite end of the thick post is slightly bent at the bottom. The whole piece is rusty, but the bottom rail is the most rusted. It's not rotted but will require more cleaning than the rest of the piece in order to get it paint-ready. Otherwise, the piece is strong, sturdy, and ready for another lifetime of service.
