What an extraordinary find! Heavy-duty, antique door hinges salvaged from the, "Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church," in Dickson City, PA (see last photo). The church is about 130 years old and these hinges were the original hinges installed on their front entry doors! Although there were 4 doors and 12 hinges, we were only able to salvage 8 hinges. Each door was made of oak, was 3'x8', and weighed about 150lbs--just to give you an idea of how strong these hinges are.

Although these look like the common, copper-plated steel hinges you find in many old homes, these are actually made of solid brass. Originally, all hinges were copper plated and finished with black lacquer (Japanned). Thanks to the numerous layers paint they had on them, most of the copper and lacquer were preserved. The degree of plating and finish varies from hinge to hinge.

Due to the amount of paint they had, it took us 2 hours to remove the pins and thoroughly clean the hinges. At the point of salvage, I needed both hands to open and close them, but now, they open and close with ease.

Considering that the hinges are about 130 years old, they are in excellent condition. They have nicks and scratches--what you would expect to find on old hardware. However, there are no breaks, cracks, gouges, or chips.

Unlike the hinges made today, which you could buy at your local hardware store; these hinges are thicker, heavier, and stronger. They are made of pure, solid, brass, not a cheap composite or alloy, and were built to last forever. If you are planning on using these hinges to hang a new door, it's a very good chance that you'll end up replacing the door before the hinges!
