Heavy-duty, antique door hinges made around the first half of the previous century. Each hinge is made of solid, heavy, thick steel.

Originally, all hinges were copper plated and finished with black lacquer (Japanned). Most of the copper and some of the lacquer remain. The degree of plating and finish varies from hinge to hinge, see  the 2 group photos to compare.

We removed the hinges from various doors that we salvaged from Northeastern PA. At the point of salvage, the hinges were painted, dirty, and  rusty (see last photo). Since then, we removed the paint, and cleaned them to the best of our ability.

Considering their age, the hinges are in great condition. They  all have the typical nicks and scratches that you would expect to find on old, used hinges, but there are no breaks, cracks, bends, or gouges. We greased the insides of the  knuckles before sliding the pins back in. Now, the hinges open and close  easily and most of the pins slide out with minimal effort.

There are new no hinges available today that are this well-made  and heavy-duty. Today's steel can't compare to the steel produced during the  time these hinges were made.
