The sides of the table hang when not in use, and extend when propped up by the swiveling arms underneath the top. There is a rectangular shelf under the top for extra storage.

Our carpenter inspected the piece from top to bottom and didn't need to make any repairs, or reinforce anything. It does have the typical small nicks and light scratches that you would expect to find on an old table, but no breaks, cracks, gouges, rot, or warp. The leaves open and close with ease, and the hinges are tightly fastened. The legs are firm and the table doesn't wobble or jiggle. This table is strong, sturdy, and ready for another lifetime of service.
