Pair Vintage Old American of Martinsville Wood Wooden Caned Back Side Dining Chair Vinyl Seat

Handsome pair of solid wood dining chairs made by, "American Furniture Co." of Martinsville, VA more commonly known as, "American of Martinsville." Each chair is made of solid ash (very similar to oak) and retains its original stain and finish. The backrests are caned and the seat cushions are upholstered with black vinyl fabric. The front legs are square, tapered, and have 2 flutes on each side.

Our carpenter inspected both chairs from top to bottom, and didn't need to make any repairs or reinforce anything as the chairs are strong and sturdy.

Both chairs are in great condition with only the typical nicks and scratches that you would expect to find on old, used chairs. The worst blemish is a small, thin piece of wood missing from the bottom of one of the rear legs of one of the chairs (see 2nd to last photo). Many times, a manufacturer will glue several pieces of wood together and cut a curve into that wood to make it seem like it's a single piece of wood that was bent into a curve. This technique is much easier to accomplish than bending a straight piece of wood. The only downside is that sometimes, the glue holding the pieces together loses its strength and one or more of the pieces fall off. If we still had the piece, we would've already glued it back on. In this case, you would either have to live with it, get a similar small piece to glue back on, or stain the unfinished wood so that it looks less obvious. Otherwise, there are no breaks, gouges, rot, or warp. The fabric is free of rips or tears but there is a whitish-colored stain on one of the chairs, which could be removed or touched up. The chairs are ready for another lifetime of service.
