Vintage French Provincial J.B. Van Sciver Co. Wood Dining Room Set

Exceptional, vintage, French Provincial dining room set manufactured by the J.B. Van Sciver Co. This beautiful, matching set includes a total of six chairs: two armchairs for the heads of the table and four side chairs. The tabletop features an oak veneer over a solid maple core, while the frame of the chairs are made of entirely of oak.

Each chair features a tall backrest accented with woven cane inserts and contoured cabriole front legs. The armchairs have beautiful, smoothly carved wood armrests. The padded seat cushions are dressed in a lovely pale pink or muted rose upholstery featuring a classic woven fan or scalloped scale pattern. 

This set includes a custom-fit protective table cover that is tailor-made specifically for this table's exact shape and dimensions. Custom covers like this are incredibly valuable because they provide a perfect, edge-to-edge shield against daily wear, hot plates, and spills, saving you the high cost of having one custom-ordered today. It does show some honest signs of use, including a small rip (see 15th photo) and some typical vintage surface discoloration from doing its job over the years. However, because this cover bore the brunt of the use, it successfully preserved the beautiful oak veneer underneath, and it remains fully functional and ready to protect the tabletop for years to come!

To complete the set, the table also comes with three matching expansion leaves, which allow you to easily extend the table to accommodate larger family gatherings and holiday dinners. What makes these leaves especially nice is that because the previous owners kept the custom table cover on the main table for so many years, the leaves have been preserved beautifully.

Our carpenter inspected the dining set from top to bottom and confirmed it's structurally tight, solid, and ready for use. However, the set does show some honest cosmetic wear from age. There is one localized tear of woven cane on just one of the chairs (see last photo for close-up). You will also find typical finish thinning and light rubbing on high-touch areas, particularly along the tops of the armrests (see 2nd to last photo for a close-up).

For a quick cosmetic fix on the apron, you can use a matching wood stain pen to easily darken and camouflage those lighter wood chips so they blend right back into the surrounding veneer. As for the woven cane back, since the break is small and localized, you can easily secure it from the back with a dab of wood glue or clear epoxy to keep it from fraying any further. Alternatively, because the cane is woven into an independent spline channel, the entire panel can be fully replaced down the road without needing to alter the chair's wood frame.

Moving to the table, there are some cosmetic chips and scrapes on the apron—the area right underneath the tabletop (see 3rd to last photo for a close-up). Additionally, there are some light, cloudy watermarks (blushing) in the clear lacquer finish on top of the tabletop itself (see 14th photo). Aside from these minor blemishes, everything is completely sturdy and ready for a lifetime of service!
